My name is Danielle O’Farrell and my trail name is Giggles.  When I am not hiking, I currently live in San Francisco and am the store manager at Last Minute Gear as well as a backpacking guide for Adventure Out.  I am an ambassador for an awesome gear company called Garage Grown Gear.  I love helping people get ready for trips and become confident in themselves in the outdoors, whether I am answering their questions, offering them advice, picking out gear with them or taking them out on a trip.  I am happiest when I am hiking, backpacking, bouldering, rock climbing, eating chocolate and hanging out with friends outside.

As a city girl, I was always fascinated with nature wherever I could find it, and though I didn’t go on my first backpacking trip until I was 18, I have always loved the outdoors.  After graduating from Tufts University I began guiding and teaching environmental and outdoor education.  It was on one of my first trips guiding that I began toying with the idea of long distance hiking.  I was guiding along parts of the Appalachian Trail at the time.   On the last morning before the end of one of these trips, I woke up and I squirmed to a sitting position in my sleeping bag.  Of course, I sighed, the birds were chirping and the sky was blue.  I was not ready to go back yet.  This feeling of not wanting to go back has stuck with me.

In 2017 I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and have become even more immersed in trying to share the outdoors with others, plan future trips and continue challenge myself.  In 2018 I was able to do a 70 mile section hike of the Bay Area Ridge Trail and next I hope to hike the Sierra High Route this summer.  The Sierra High Route differs in that it is all at elevation and there is no trail.  I am looking forward to the challenges of this route and am excited to continue to grow my skills and experiences.

This website chronicles some of my adventures, lessons that I have learned along the way as well as some advice and tips.  You can also follow me on Instagram @WithTheWildThings.
